ABUCAY, Bataan: Gawad Kalinga is set to build houses for more than
100 squatter families in Abucay, Bataan on a 1.7-hectare land
purchased and donated by the municipal government, Mayor Ana
Santiago said Thursday.
The Abucay town mayor said she expected the
project to start first week of March after sponsors under the Gawad
Kalinga Community Development Foundation inspect next week the site
located at the Dominican Hills near the Sibul Springs.
The Dominican Hills is a picturesque valley
where a branch of La Salle College is located.
Gawad Kalinga is under the Catholic charismatic
movement, Couples for Christ.
Target beneficiaries are 105 families from Sitio
Bayabas in Salian and 67 families from other barangays in Abucay.
Santiago said they are assessing the actual living condition of 25
families from Barangay Gabon for inclusion in the housing project.
The Sangguniang Bayan of Abucay authorized Mayor
Santiago to enter into a memorandum of agreement with the advocacy
group. The municipality donates the lot while GK provides the
materials and supervision with the beneficiaries assisting in the
construction of their own houses.
Each family from the poorest of the poor sector
is entitled to lots of 60 square meters each.
Municipal Administrator Rudy Valencia said the
first batch of squatters to be relocated will come from Salian and
later those from Barangays Gabon and Wawa will follow. Abucay has
nine barangays.
“This project is under one of the programs of
Mayor Santiago to uplift the lives of her constituents and to let
them feel that the municipal government of Abucay cares for them,”
Valencia said.
Abucay has an Internal Revenue Allotment of P32
million and revenues of P12 million annually.
