BACOLOD City: Mayor Evelio R. Leonardia said tycoon Lucio Tan is
willing to shoulder the expenses for the reopening of the old
Bacolod Airport if this will push through.
The mayor announced this after he and Reopen
(Retain) Bacolod Airport Movement officials Babes Alvarez and
Charlie Hagad met with the business taipan last Tuesday at his
office in Manila.
Leonardia said that Tan is all out to the idea
of the airport’s reopening for the operation of the general
aviation, commercial aviation and of a flying school to be
established at the Bacolod Airport.
The mayor said the tycoon has even expressed his
willingness to shoulder the expenses of operating the old airport.
He said that Tan, who is an adopted son of the
city, is in favor of the continued operation of the old Bacolod
Airport for the convenience of the people here.
The mayor also met with Department of
Transportation and Communications (DOTC) Secretary Leandro Mendoza
Wednesday, where he brought up the proposal to reopen the old
airport.
According to the mayor, Mendoza will form a team
from DOTC soon to talk with Bacolod counterparts on the matter of
technology, administrative concerns, financial aspect, security
and other concerns on the old airport.
“This is a big leap for our crusade to reopen
the Bacolod Airport,” he said.
