“CRITICS testify to the clear and intuitive playing of Matthias
Soucek. He knows how to capture the hearts of his audience and
transport them into another world, with the deep emotion of his
playing, ranging from lyrical fantasy to fiery virtuosity” —Raiffeisen
Zeitung, 2007
Winning the grand prix at the Brahms Piano
Competition in Hamburg and becoming the youngest winner in the
history of the competition, Austrian Matthias Soucek has truly
established himself as an outstanding world-class concert pianist.
In 2006 he gave his debut performance at the Golden Hall of The
Musikverein Vienna with the first piano concerto by Tchaikovsky with
the Brno Philharmonic.
His CD series of Beethoven sonatas will be
launched by the label Gramola in March 2008, starting with the
sonatas op. 31/2 “The Tempest,” op. 27/2 “Moonlight” and op.
13 “Pathétique.”
As a soloist, Soucek has performed with
orchestras like the Vienna Chamber Orchestra, Tonkünstler
Orchestra, Slovakian Philharmonic, Janacek Chamber Philharmonic, and
the Brno and Württemberg Philharmonic under well known conductors.
His latest CD titled Homage to Mozart was
released in 2006, including the first recording of an arrangement by
Soucek himself, which has been highly acclaimed by the music press.
Soucek was born in Vienna in 1978 and received
his first piano lessons at the age of seven. His musical talent
became evident as he started to play melodies from memory that he
had heard in concerts or on the radio. At the age of nine, he became
a student of the Music Academy Vienna and was accepted as a regular
“adult student” at the age of 13 at the Music Academy Graz.
During his studies, Soucek is a recipient of two consecutive top
prizes in the International Beethoven Piano Competition Vienna.
For his evening concert at the Philamlife
Auditorium on February 2, Soucek will perform works by Mozart,
Schubert, Chopin, Bethoveen and Liszt.
