BORACAY ISLAND: Operatives of the Bureau of
Immigration (BI) arrested a suspected Russian prostitute plying her
illegal trade in Boracay Island in Aklan.
Immigration Commissioner
Marcelino C. Libanan ordered the arrest of the 21-year-old Russian
Anna Lezhnina following complaints from resort owners and residents
in Boracay regarding the woman’s alleged indecency and unruly
behavior.
Libanan issued the arrest order
last week immediately upon his return to Manila from the popular
island resort, which he visited to kick off the BI’s nationwide
information campaign on its new visa-issuance-made-simple (VIMS)
project.
In a dialogue with resort owners
during the visit, Libanan was informed about the case of Lezhnina,
who, according to the complainants, had been causing trouble to
residents of the island because of allegedly immoral activities.
The Russian national had
reportedly been staying in different places of the island without
any visible means of income or employment, and has been arrested
five times by Boracay policemen for scandalous behavior.
Libanan issued a mission order
against Lezhnina and dispatched members of the BI law enforcement
division to apprehend the woman who is now detained in the Bicutan
immigration detention center pending deportation proceedings.
“While we would like to
encourage the arrival of more tourists in the country, we do not
welcome undesirable foreigners whose presence here are inimical to
peace and public morals,” the BI chief said.
Libanan has ordered the BI law
and investigation division to secure the appropriate clearances from
other government law enforcement agencies that would facilitate the
immediate deportation of Lezhnina to Russia.
BI records showed the woman was
already overstaying at the time of her arrest as she arrived in the
country as a tourist on February 21 last year. She failed to extend
her stay after her documents expired in September.
