AROUND 700 tae kwon do jins will vie for honors in the tough,
prestigious Petron and Smart Carlos Palanca Jr. (CPJ) champions on
February 3 at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.
Philippine Tae kwon do Association President
Robert Aventajado said the event, which includes poomse, is part of
the selection for this year’s Philippine national team.
Tournament winners will undergo rigorous
training for their participation in the forthcoming Asian
Championships in Zheng Ziu, China; world junior championship in
Izmir, Turkey; World Tae kwon do Festival Chung Chung Camp in Seoul,
Korea; Hanmadang in Los Angeles, United States; World Poomse Korea
Open in Chuncheon, Korea; and Korea Expo in Mooju, Korea.
Organizing committee Chairman Sung Chon Hong
explains that poomse means form. It is performed by following a
systematic time of movements using the hands and feet and
interconnected techniques like blocking, punching, striking,
thrusting and kicking. Constant training in poomse helps improve
flexibility and control in breathing, balance, power, eye focus and
mental discipline.
Poomse action will be held in individual (men
and women) and team (men and women) in nine divisions including
junior, first senior, second senior, first master, second master,
first pair (male and female), first team division and second team
division.
In the sparring event, athletes will compete in
the senior, junior, mid-junior division for men and women and grade
school for boys and girls.
Martial arts enthusiasts, especially children
who are interested to learn the sport, are invited to watch the
tournament starting at 9 a.m.
The CPJ event is supported by Smart
Communications, PLDT, Petron, Milo and the Philippine Sports
Commission.
