LETRAN fought back in the second half to beat College of St. Benilde
88-75 Friday and take a solo lead in the 84th National Collegiate
Athletic Association (NCAA) basketball tournament at the Cuneta
Astrodome.
Rafael Jazul had a career-high 37 points to
power the Knights to their second straight win and handed the
Blazers their first loss in three outings.
Jazul, who also finished with 8 rebounds, 5
assists and 3 steals, scored 6 points in a 7-3 run that gave Letran
a 58-53 lead, 3:15 left in the third quarter.
The Knights grabbed the lead at 51-50 courtesy
of Rey Guevarra’s triple.
“I just told them in the final half to tighten
our defense. We played a very lousy defense in the first two
quarters that allowed St. Benilde to take the lead but it’s good
they listened and played well the rest of the way,” said
multi-titled coach Louie Alas.
Carl Melegrito had 13 points while Rey Guevarra
added 9 for Letran, which scored an 89-83 win over Jose Rizal
University on June 28.
