CEBU CITY: South Western University (SWU) Cobras
banked on an impressive first quarter to demolish University of
Luzon Golden Tigers, 88-52, in the opening game of the 6th Asian
University Basketball Championship Friday at the Cebu City Coliseum
here.
The Cobras raced to a 24-7 lead
as their pesky defense forced the Golden Tigers to several turnovers
early in the game.
Alfred Belande spearheaded the
first quarter assault of SWU, firing 10 of his 18 points. Eric
Zanoria chipped in 16.
The Cobras, who captured the
National Inter-Collegiate Championship crown in February, tallied
their biggest lead at 86-48 with 1:38 left. They also limited
University of Luzon to six points in the last seven minutes of the
final quarter.
