These are major Philippine marine tragedies recorded by the Board of Marine Inquiry through the years.
1980
February 14: MV Filnor IX sank in Coron, Palawan, with one person dead.
April 22: MV Don Juan collided with MV Tacloban City. At least 18 people died, leaving 115 people missing and 745 survivors.
1981
July 7: MV Juan caught fire near the vicinity of Cavite City. At least 52 people died.
November 29: LC-1702, towed by MT Masbate, sank off Ilin Island, Mindoro, leaving three people missing.
1982
March 7: MV Doņa Susana sank off Plaridel, leaving 16 people missing and four survivors.
1983
March 8: MV Sweet Name and MT Capiz City collided off Shell Island killing one person.
May 24: MB Rommel sank off Sta. Ana, Cagayan, killing three people and leaving 28 people missing.
1984
September 1: LCT Batasan capsized off Arangasa Island with 15 people dead.
October 28: At least 34 people died and 219 survived after MV Venus sank off Sibuyan Sea in Romblon.
1985
October 14: MV Marcos Faberes killed eight people and left eight people missing after it sank off Balintang Channel in Batanes.
December 3: MV Central Leyte sank off the vicinity of Brunei that left one person dead.
December 18: MV Asuncion V sank off Cape Calante, Mindoro, leaving 115 people missing. At least 11 people died.
1986
April 24: MV Doņa Josefina sank off Isabel, Leyte, which killed 34 people and left 61 people missing.
August 1: MV Beatriz killed 11 people and left 28 people missing and 101 survivors after it sank off San Isidro, Pacijan Island.
August 16: MT MAYSUN left two missing people after it sank off Matalinoc Point, Negros Occidental.
1987
December 20: MV Doņa Paz left 26 survivors as the ferry and an oil tanker, MT Vector, collided off Tablas Strait between Marinduque and Mindoro. As much as 4,000 people died, an unofficial report stated. BMI's official tally: more than 1,800 deaths.
1988
October 24: MV Doņa Marilyn sank off between Tanguingui Island and Manok Manok Island while en route from Manila to Tacloban, Leyte. At least 77 people died, left two people missing and 300 survivors.
1989
March 10: Two people died after MV Lorcon V sank off Pola Bay.
1990
July 26: MV Central Bohol left some crewmembers missing after it sank off Canayan Island.
1991
March 28: FB Toroshita sank off Semirara Island, Antique, which killed at least five people and left two people missing and 81 survivors.
1994
December 2: MV Cebu City collided with MV Kota Suria, killing 73 and leaving 41 people missing and 525 survivors.
1995
May 16: MV Viva Antipolo VII caught fire and sank at the vicinity of Dalahican Fishport, Lucena, killing 62 and leaving 10 people missing and 142 survivors.
December 13: MV Kimelody Cristy killed 17 people and left 13 people missing and 100 survivors after it caught fire five miles off Fortune Island.
1996
February 18: ML Gretchen I ran aground off the vicinity of Cadiz City, killing 51 people and leaving 145 survivors.
1997
August 15: FB King Roger killed at least 17 people and left 14 survivors after it capsized off Manila Bay, South Harbor, Manila.
August 15: MV Kalibo Star sank off the vicinity of Tincasan Point, between Maripipi and Biliran Island, killing 12 and leaving 13 people missing and 66 survivors.
1998
September 18: MV Princess of the Orient sank off the vicinity of Fortune Island, Batangas, killing 70 and leaving 335 survivors. 80 were missing.
1999
July 22: MT Mary Anne sank off the vicinity of Munga Lighthouse in Bataan, leaving one person missing.
December 23: MV Asia South Korea killed 58 people, after sinking in the vicinity of Bantayan, Cebu. There were 699 survivors.
2000
April 12: ML Annahada sank off the vicinity of Jolo Pier in Jolo, Sulu. 138 people were killed.
September 2: MV ACX Lilac and Barge Cargolift III collided on Manila Bay. Four people were missing and two survived.
2001
December 22: MB Island Service Boat-II and FB Dondon Gulf collided off the area of Hagnaya, Cebu, killing 10 people. 69 people survived.
2002
April 11: MV Maria Carmela burned off the vicinity of Pagbilao, Quezon, killing 39 and leaving six missing and 83 to survive.
May 11: MB Nilode-A capsized off the vicinity of Barangay Antipolo, Naval, Maripipi, Biliran, Samar. The incident killed 19 people and left 79 survivors.
2003
February 24: MV Mahlia sank off the vicinity of Northeast Amani, Kagoshima, Japan. Seven people were missing and only one survived.
May 25: MV Super Ferry 12 and MV San Nicolas collided off the vicinity of Limbones Island, killing 43. There were 21 people missing and 182 survivors.
2004
February 27: MV Super Ferry 14 burned in the vicinity of El Fraile near Corregidor, Bataan. The incident killed 94 people, leaving 24 people missing and 781 survivors.
2005
August 28: MV Doņa Ramona caught fire on board in the vicinity of Kulaybato Wharf in Barangay Kulaybato, Lamitan, Basilan. The incident killed one and left 29 survivors.
July 7: MV Princess of the World caught fire on board in the vicinity of Dulongin Point in Zamboanga peninsula. The incident left more than 200 survivors.
2006
August 11: MT Solar I sank off the vicinity of Guimaras Island, leaving two people missing. There were 16 survivors.
January 15: MB Sunjay capsized off the vicinity of San Ricardo, Southern Leyte, leaving 16 dead, 12 injured and four missing. 252 people survived.
November 20: Barge Ras sank due to rough seas 5 kilometers northeast of Plaridel, Misamis Oriental. There were no casualties.
November 25: MB Leonida II sank off the vicinity of Basilan Point, Hinatuan Island, Surigao City. The incident left 19 dead and 66 survivors.
2007
June 10: MV Catalyn-D caught fire on board in the vicinity of Pantocomi Point, Palauan Bay, Mindoro, leaving five dead and 283 survivors.
July 12: MV Blue Water Princess I ran aground and sank near the coast of San Francisco, Quezon. The incident, which occurred as the Typhoon Bebeng passed through the country, left 11 dead and more than 120 survivors.
2008
February 14: MV Don Wilfredo sank near the shores of Barangay Buhang, Bulusan, Sorsogon, leaving one dead and 17 survivors.
June 21: MV Princess of Stars sank 3km (2 miles) from Sibuyan Island in central Philippines in typhoon-lashed seas, leaving around 800 people missing.
