The most important measure of our work is the lives we touch. Gilda
Lim, an attorney, realtor, and mother of two, continues to build a
community of environmental stewards among the civic organizations
she previously led and currently leads.
When Lim became president of Rotary Club Makati
Dasmariñas District 3830, she embarked into an environmental
program during her year of service, undertaking a joint project with
Haribon Foundation on a campaign for increasing awareness on the
illegal wildlife trade.
Likewise, as president of the Inner Wheel Club
of Makati Dasmariñas, she joined the 2007 Million Hectare Walk of
the Foundation to support its campaign to plant more native trees.
Aside from the members of the Inner Wheel Club, she has also allowed
her real estate staff to join in Haribon’s campaign to help
restore the country’s rainforests to raise their awareness about
their environment and how each can become an environmental steward.
“I always speak to friends and family members
about how and why we should actively assist in every way we can to
protect our environment; by practicing environment friendly
practices in my household and office such as conserving water,
energy, and gas, recycling, using reusable shopping bags, etc.,”
she says.
Today, she continues to support Haribon by
donating funds as well as encouraging and promoting a partnership
between Haribon and the mentioned Rotary District in embarking on an
environmental project that will create a bigger impact on
environmental awareness, protection, and wildlife conservation.
“This partnership is about to be implemented
during Rotary Year 2008-2009. I believe this is my biggest
accomplishment so far as a Haribon member,” she says.
“Aside from engaging in projects to plant more
trees, I am also supporting the installation of mooring buoys in the
surrounding areas of the Apo Reef to protect and preserve the
precious coral reefs in the area,” she says.
When asked about her dream for the Philippine
environment overall, she stated: “I wish that someday soon all
sectors of Philippine society will go back to basics in their way of
life despite technological advances so that we may not further
contribute to the deterioration of the environment, and instead
become vanguards and guardians of the environment. It may not be
easy because it means changing certain habits brought about by the
conveniences of progress, however, we should have the political will
to do so. We owe this not only to ourselves but to our children and
our children’s children so that we may leave behind the legacy of
a clean mother earth that nurtures and enhances life.”
