DENNIS ORCOLLO lived up to his lofty billing by topping the tough
Qatar World 9-Ball Open Saturday night at the Qatar Billiards and
Snooker Federation on Al Muntazah Road in Doha, Qatar.
The son of a fisherman from Surigao defeated top
European player Niels Feijen of the Netherlands, 13-5, to bag the
title and the $40,000 top prize.
Feijen settled for $20,000 while losing
semifinalists reigning world 8-ball champ Ralf Souquet of Germany
and current US Open 9-ball king Shane Van Boening of the United
States bagged $10,000 each.
It was the second major title won by Orcollo
this year. The world’s top ranked player also ruled the Japan
9-Ball Open in March.
Orcollo earlier took the measure Souquet, 11-8,
while Feijen downed Van Boening, 11-8.
The other Filipinos, who competed in the
$150,000 tournament were Efren “Bata” Reyes, Francisco
“Django” Bustamante, Alex “The Lion” Pagulayan, Ronato
“Volcano” Alcano, Lee Vann “The Slayer” Corteza, Warren
“Warrior” Kiamco, Ramil “Bebeng” Gallego, Antonio
“Ga-Ga” Gabica, Marlon “Marvelous” Manalo, Jeffrey “The
Bull” De Luna, Roberto “Pinoy Superman” Gomez, Joven “The
Shark” Bustamante, Allan “Surigao” Cuartero and Ruben Cuna.
