Southeast Asian Games veteran Raoul Miranda snatched a bronze medal
in men’s singles at the start of the 20th Asian Tenpin Bowling
Championships at the Hong Kong Bowling City lanes.
Miranda, ranked 188th in Asia, amassed 1,437
pinfalls (222, 258, 254, 230, 247 and 235) to finish third in the
106-man field.
South Korean Choi Ki Bong took the gold with
1,490 while Malaysian Alex Liew settled for silver with 1,454 in the
tournament participated in by 228 keglers from Malaysia, South
Korea, Hong Kong, Thailand, India, China, Singapore, Macau, Saudi
Arabia, Qatar, Japan, Egypt, Kuwait, Guam, Saipan, North Korea,
United Arab Emirates and Chinese Taipei.
Other Filipino entries in men’s singles fell
short in their respective games.
Frederick Ong wound up 14th (1,354), Chester
King finished 17th (1,334), Vladimir Tuazon placed 31st (1,303),
Benshir Layoso landed 51st (1,248) and Tyrone Ongpauco ranked 68th
(1,193).
While the South Koreans extended their dominance
in women’s singles, the Philippine women’s team, on the other
hand, suffered an early blow with Marie Alexis Sy tallying just
1,297 (181, 184, 213, 258, 237 and 224) for 15th place and 2002
champion Liza del Rosario rolling 1,280 (196, 181, 194, 206, 288 and
215) for 19th.
Four other Filipinas also stumbled in the
opening day—Krizziah Tabora with 1,262 (23rd), Dyan Coronacion
with 1,199 (32nd), Elaine Florencio with 1,174 (38th) and Kimberly
Lao with 1,101 (52nd).
Koreans Hwang Sun Ok (1,497), Choi Jin A (1,494)
and Jeon Eun Hee (1,479) took the gold, silver and bronze,
respectively.
South Korea led the medal standings with two
gold medals, a silver and a bronze followed by Malaysia with a
silver and the Philippines with a bronze.
