ADDITIONAL reflectorized signs will be installed over the
24-kilometer stretch of EDSA so as to further avoid road accidents,
particularly along the Ayala tunnel, the Metro Manila Development
Authority (MMDA) said Monday.
“Our priority will be the service road and
tunnel along Ayala Avenue, but we will also place the [reflectorized]
devices in other portions of EDSA,” MMDA General Manager Robert
Nacianceno said.
“We will also place flexible bollards to serve
as a safety device along the entrance of underpasses to caution the
motorists,” Nacianceno added. Bollards are rigid posts that can be
arranged in a line to close a road or path to vehicles, or separate
the vehicular traffic from pedestrians.
Nacianceno stressed that the MMDA should not be
blamed for the two consecutive vehicular accidents near the Ayala
tunnel last week that caused traffic along EDSA for several hours,
noting that the agency has already installed a concrete divider with
reflectorized signs at the tunnel’s entrance.
“It is our responsibility to guide the
motorists, but we cannot discount the fact that there are reckless
drivers who disregard traffic signs,” Nacianceno said.
Nacianceno made the comment after Makati
Department of Public Safety chief Hermenegildo San Miguel slammed
the MMDA for the agency’s “insufficient” early warning devices
for the underpass.
“There were not enough lights in the tunnel
and that separator should have been properly reflectorized.
Obviously, it is the fault of the MMDA,” San Miguel said.
The tanker spilled the flammable chemical on the
road, prompting traffic authorities to close the area for several
hours since it might cause a fire and hit a nearby Meralco power
substation.
The cargo truck, on the other hand, hit the same
spot the following day. Both accidents took place at dawn.
