A group of pastors and bishops on Monday filed a case against the
owners of men’s magazines in the country at the Manila
Prosecutor’s Office.
Led by former pastor and Manila’s Sixth
District Congressman Bienvinido Abante, the prelates filed a
complaint against Playboy Magazine, FHM Philippines, Maxim
Philippines, and three other tabloids for allegedly violating
Articles 200 and 201 of the Revised Penal Code and Manila City
Ordinance No. 7780 which “prohibits the publication, sale,
distribution and exhibition of obscene and pornographic acts and
materials.”
“We strongly condemn these malicious practices
because these unfairly portray women as mere objects, diminish the
holy institution of marriage, undermine individual and family
values, erode the minds and character of our youth and ultimately
invite divine judgment and destruction upon our suffering nation,”
said Abante’s group in a statement.
Aside from the magazines, also charged were
owners of tabloids Hataw, Sagad, and Toro Baligtaran, which
allegedly feature naked women in its pages.
“Such portion pages of the said magazines and
tabloids are clearly scandalous, obscene and pornographic within the
meaning, [and] were very accessible within the City of Manila from
September 2007 to July 2008,” stated in the group’s three-page
complaint.
