THE Philippine rugby team scored a masterful 20-8 victory over host
Guam to rule the first Asian Five Nations International Rugby
Regional Tournament on Monday at the Wettengel Rugby Field.
Armed with speed and tough defense, the
Nationals got off to a strong start with three successive points
capped by Oliver Saunders 25-yard upright in the 12th minute.
The Filipinos, silver medalist in the 2007
Thailand Southeast Asian Games, further stamped their class in the
next minutes with Matthew Saunders and Rupert Zappia taking the
cudgels to preserve a comfortable 13-3 lead en route to the victory.
The Matthew Cullen-mentored team, whose trip was
supported by the Philippine Sports Commission, also blanked Brunei
Darussalam, 101-0.
The second Asian Five Nations Regional
Tournament is scheduled on July 12 to 19 in Indonesia while the
third and fourth editions will be held in Qatar and Kyrgyzstan on
September.
