UV, Huanquiao score second victory

CEBU CITY: The University of Visayas (UV) and the Huaquiao University of China defeated separate rivals to share the lead in the 6th Asian University Basketball Championships at the Cebu City Coliseum.

Fil-Am Gregory Slaughter exploded for 28 points to power the UV Green Lancers past the Angeles University Foundation (AUF) Great Danes, 89-69.

After a quiet first half, Slaughter scattered 21 points in the second half to lead his team’s breakaway.

Despite the lopsided outcome, the game was highly emotional and physical.

Limmuel Manarang of AUF and Jun Lasala of UV were being ejected at the 7:22 mark of the fourth quarter after a heated verbal tussle.

The Green Lancers started to pull away in the third period behind the inside forays of the 6-11 Slaughter, turning a three-point halftime lead into a 64-51 bubble.

“Sana magtuloy-tuloy pa. Kalaban namin China bukas. Sana maging consistent kami [I hope this continues. We’ll be facing China tomorrow. I hope we can be consistent.] said UV coach Elmer Boy Cabahug.

Harlow Villanil and Chris Diputado also played big for the Green Lancers, scoring 15 and 14 points, respectively. Matthew Carney paced the Great Danes with 16.

Meanwhile, Zhang Jiabin’s hot shooting carried Huaquiao past the University of Luzon Golden Tigers, 104-94.

Zhang converted seven triples and finished with a game-high 26 points.

In the other game, Han Yang University of Korea trounced the Southwestern Western University Cobras, 81-72, for their first win in the tournament sponsored by Burlington, Wilson, Everlast, Summit Mineral Water, Philippine Star and Fortuna Hotel.
