Green Lancers, Cobras
prevail in AUBC tourney

CEBU CITY: University of Visayas (UV) downed Haquiao University of China 67-63 Sunday night for its third win in the Sixth Asian University Basketball Championships at the Cebu Coliseum.

Fil-Am Gregory Slaughter scored 23 points for the Green Lancers, who sent the Chinese to a tie for second with Southwestern University (SWU) and Han Yang University of South Korea at 2-1.

UV only needs one win to advance in the championship round of the tournament sponsored by Burlington, Wilson, Everlast, Summit Mineral Water, Philippine Star and Fortuna Hotel.

In other games, Jano Nunez scored 20 points to lead SWU to a 79-59 victory over Angeles University Foundation 79-59 while Lee Dong Geon had a tournament-best 36 points to power Han Yang University of Korea over University of Luzon 110-86.

Down 12-20 at the end of the first quarter, the Great Danes rallied to tie the count at 33-all at the half. But the Cobras waxed hot in the third quarter and kept their momentum en route to victory.

“Sana makalusot kami. Maganda nilaro ng mga bata kahit pisikal ‘yung laban. ‘Pag nanalo bukas, may chance kami mag number one or two sa ranking,” SWU coach Dodie Miego said. The Cobras will face China next.
