CEBU CITY: University of Visayas (UV) downed Haquiao University of
China 67-63 Sunday night for its third win in the Sixth Asian
University Basketball Championships at the Cebu Coliseum.
Fil-Am Gregory Slaughter scored 23 points for
the Green Lancers, who sent the Chinese to a tie for second with
Southwestern University (SWU) and Han Yang University of South Korea
at 2-1.
UV only needs one win to advance in the
championship round of the tournament sponsored by Burlington,
Wilson, Everlast, Summit Mineral Water, Philippine Star and Fortuna
Hotel.
In other games, Jano Nunez scored 20 points to
lead SWU to a 79-59 victory over Angeles University Foundation 79-59
while Lee Dong Geon had a tournament-best 36 points to power Han
Yang University of Korea over University of Luzon 110-86.
Down 12-20 at the end of the first quarter, the
Great Danes rallied to tie the count at 33-all at the half. But the
Cobras waxed hot in the third quarter and kept their momentum en
route to victory.
“Sana makalusot kami. Maganda nilaro ng mga
bata kahit pisikal ‘yung laban. ‘Pag nanalo bukas, may chance
kami mag number one or two sa ranking,” SWU coach Dodie Miego
said. The Cobras will face China next.
