CEBU CITY: Huaquiao University of
China downed Southwestern University while University of Luzon (UL)
barged into the win column Monday in the Sixth Asian University
Basketball Championships at the Cebu Coliseum.
Yu Xiang sizzled with 27 points,
including 15 in the third quarter, to power the Chinese squad over
the Cobras 85-78.
Trailing 42-47 early the third
quarter, Huaquiao held a 17-0 run to take a 59-47 lead.
The Cobras fought back with a 9-0
run to cut the deficit to 74-81 going into the final two minutes but
Jiang Xinxin scored on a jumper as the Chinese hang tough to
preserve the victory.
Eric Zanoria finished with 19
points for the Cobras, who dropped to 2-2 while Alfred Belande added
12 markers.
In the other game, the UL Golden
Tigers rose from deep slumber to end its three-game losing skid with
an 81-99 win over the Angeles University Great Danes.
Big men Ryan Espeño and Norman
Ilao scored 23 points apiece for the Golden Tigers, who led by as
many as 20 points, the last at 63-43 in the third quarter.
“Nagpayoff lang ‘yung
perseverance ng players. With this win, definitely naboost ‘yung
confidence nila,” said UL assistant coach Jeffrey Gatchalian.
The Great Danes didn’t go down
without a fight and closed in at 56-65 before Espeño waxed hot in
the fourth quarter where he erupted for 13 points.
Gerald Gigante and Chucky Gomez
finished with 22 points each for AUF, which absorbed its fourth
straight loss.
