CEBU CITY: University of Luzon (UL) banked on
Rodolfo Natavio’s 3-pointer in the dying seconds to beat
University of Visayas in overtime, 82-81, Wednesday in the Sixth
Asian University Basketball Championships at the Cebu Coliseum.
Natavio’s game-winning shot came after Richard
Dennison split his charities off Norman Ilao for an 81-79 count, 7.3
seconds remaining.
“Hindi ko inasahan na papasok ‘yun, basta
kinuha ko na lang ‘yung bola,” said Natavio, who finished with a
game-high 16 points.
Paul Sabordo also had 16 points in an all-around
performance for the Golden Tigers, who improved their record to 2-2.
“Para sa team namin, gusto lang namin silang
bigyan ng magandang game para hindi naman kami mapahiya. Malayo pa
kasi pinanggalingan namin,” said an ecstatic UL coach Renato
Vidal, who only had a win to boast coming into the game.
The Lancers, on the other hand, absorbed their
first loss in four outings. They must win over the Southwestern
University Cobras to reach the championship round of this tournament
sponsored by Burlington, Wilson, Everlast, Summit Mineral Water,
Philippine Star and Fortuna Hotel.
In the other game, Song Se Joon exploded for 37
points as Han Yang University of Korea overwhelmed winless Angeles
University Foundation, 108-84, for its third win in four starts.
Han Yang has to beat Huaquiao University of
China (3-1) to advance to the next round.
