CAREER, LIFE, SUCCESS
By Jay Jay Viray
What makes employees stay

In my last column, I discussed some factors that causes employees to resign from their work, based on various researches I had made for the Business Forum, which we had organized for our corporate members in Cebu.

I mentioned low base pay, no opportunity for promotion, and high stress levels as among the usual reasons for employees’ quitting from their job. However, issues not necessarily related to income also came up in my research: some employees feel less fulfilled in their work; they lack trust in their superiors, or they want to avail benefits not present in the company such as training programs and flexible hours for more work-life balance.

As you see, it’s not always about money. You have probably met a person who has been loyal to the company he works for despite his “not-so-high” salary. He must have a good reason for staying.

True enough, there are strategies, apart from providing high salary that companies can use to retain valuable employees. Let me share some options in confronting the challenges of employee resignation.

Build morale and create an atmosphere of trust. Let the vision be known to every member of the organization as it gives everyone a sense of direction and confidence that he or she is an important part of the company. Encourage interaction between managers and subordinates to provide employees the opportunity to speak and be heard. Welcome questions from the staff and be eager to address them, especially the hard ones. Be there during tough times. Make them feel that the company is willing to ride with them in bumpy road.

Show appreciation, grant rewards, and benefits beyond the basic salary. Most of the time, a little appreciation is just what a person needs to feel his worth. Back up your word of gratitude with investments in equipment and resources that will support the employees in delivering a job well-done. Do not underestimate the significance of a health care benefit. If the company can afford, offer other benefits like life insurance, gym membership, clothing allowance, etc.

Provide opportunities for skill upgrade and create a mentoring system. Allow employees to undergo training programs such as certificate courses and MBA programs. Otherwise, even brief fora and short seminars can help employees learn new techniques and work strategies. Make way for suggestions of ideas and exercise of creativity. Help them reach their potentials; give encouragement and practical advice that would aid them in career advancement and future promotion.

Make time for camaraderie and enjoyable gatherings. Create a spirit of fun by organizing company outings or party, sports fest or even short creative presentations. Such activities break the monotony of work and give room to de-stress. These also give the employees the chance to show their artistic talents.

Employees resign for a reason. Yet, companies can also give them reasons to stay. Besides the motivation to earn, people work to seek personal fulfillment. Pay them what is just; or possibly more. But consider too, the keys to their heart. Know what they sing about, cry about and dream about. Know what they do well that will produce results. Most likely, they will stay and help the company reach its goal.
