Growling Tigers barge into win column

SEASON 69 titlist University of Santo Tomas blasted University of the Philippines, 94-75, on Saturday to barge into the win column in the 71st University Athletic Association of the Philippines men’s basketball tournament at the Philsports Arena.

Dylan Ababou finished with 20 points, three rebounds and three assists and a steal while reigning Most Valuable Player Jervy Cruz backed him up with 15 points on top of 5 rebounds.

Rookie Jeric Fortuna, Francis Allera and Mark Canlas also made their presence felt with 11 points each as UST bounced back from its 73-79 loss University of the East on July 5.

“Magandang panalo ito para sa amin after our first game loss. Maganda ang inilaro ng mga bata pati yung rookie [Fortuna] namin. May ilalabas pa yan sa mga susunod naming laban,” said UST coach Pido Jarencio.

The Tigers and Fighting Maroons are now tied at 1-1 behind leaders University of the East and Ateneo de Manila University with identical 2-0 clean slates. Defending champion De La Salle University and Far Eastern University were still playing at press time.

Ababou and Cruz took charge in the early goings as the Tigers converted 16 turnover points for a 61-43 advantage entering the second half.

UST scored the biggest lead of 29 points behind Ababou’s charities, 79-50, 2:15 left in the third quarter.

Slotman Magi Sison backstopped UP with 20 points while rookies Ronald Pajela and Don Carlo Fortu combined for 17 points.
