PEOPLE
By Bob Garon
Moderation

Many of our problems stem when we somehow we lose our sense of balance and go overboard. We fail to keep a balance in the way we approach matters.

We get so angry that we scream and shout to the point of being offensive when all that was needed was a gentle reminder. We lost our emotional balance and subsequently lost a friend.

We like to eat, but when we eat too much we gain weight that not only is unnecessary for life but also becomes a liability to good health. Here again, we do not eat what the nutritionists call “well-balanced” meals.

A drink now and then isn’t a bad thing, but when we lose our balance and drink ourselves into alcoholism, we find ourselves in a life-threatening situation.

Television can be very entertaining and even educational, but too much TV makes you morph into a couch potato. Not good. You have lost your sense of balance and are getting too much of a good thing.

I read articles in the newspaper about computer addiction. It seems that some people are so taken up with the Internet and computer games that they lose all sense of time and balance when they get online. Some do so even if it seriously affects their social life and even their good health. There have even been cases of computer addicts who so abused themselves that they actually died in front of their computer. That is truly losing one’s balance. Too much of anything, even a good thing, isn’t good. For example, nothing brings more pain than too much pleasure.

Drug addicts go so far as to self-destruct in their pursuit of pleasure. Smokers literally kill themselves because they cannot live without their pleasure. When I told my 35-year-old cousin years ago that her smoking habit might kill her, she laughed and said something about dying with a cigarette in her hand. Smoking killed her.

Even in religious matters, we can lose our balance. There are those who kill in the name of God believing it pleases Him. Then there are people who get so involved in Church matters that they neglect their families.

Living a healthy lifestyle is all about balance. It is difficult because we are easily drawn to excess, but then, we need to strive to find the right balance that allows us to keep everything in proper perspective.
