NPA rebels attack firm,
burn heavy equipment

DAVAO CITY: An undetermined number of New People’s Army (NPA) rebels attacked an establishment in Barangay Lasang, Bunawan District, around 2 a.m. Sunday, reported the Philippine News Agency.

The rebels disarmed the still unidentified security guard on duty with his 12-gauge shotgun and burned one unit of crane of Filchin Corp. worth P5 million. The rebels also destroyed some of the company’s office equipment. No one was reported hurt in the incident.

Maj. Armando Rico, Eastern Mindanao Command chief of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, said the Task Force Davao led by Col. Ricardo Rainier Cruz 3rd, and the 72nd Infantry Battalion led by Col. Alexander Ambal of the Philippine Army, are now conducting hot pursuit operation and blocking forces in the entire Davao City.

Rico said the Philippine National Police reported the company received an extortion letter from NPA group last year.

“But we are still verifying this incident since nobody claimed responsibility for the attack as of press time,” Rico said.

He called on the public to be more vigilant and to immediately report to local officials if they noticed strangers in their areas. He also urged the barangay officials to activate the “Bantay Bayan” system through their barangay tanods.
