THE World Pool-Billiard Association (WPA) has
officially released to various continental associations the
allocation and qualifying system for the 2008 World Ten Ball
Championship (WTBC) slated September 29 to October 5 in Manila.
WPA President Ian Anderson said
the system is designed to give adequate representation for all
regions and enable serious pool players around the world the
opportunity to secure spots in the championship.
The WPA aims to seat 128 players
in the world championship. Players around the world can secure spots
by either earning a spot outright through achievement, such as a
current world championship title, or by getting named by the
continental federation of their region to represent the continent.
The continental federations have
full authority to establish the selection process for their
respective players. This is normally determined through regional and
national rankings and special qualifying events.
Anderson also announced that
spots for the WTBC will be distributed from the spots given to the
five regions—AAPA-Africa, Asian Pocket Billiards Union-Asia,
Billiards Congress of America-North America, European Pocket
Billiards Union-Europe and Oceania Pocket Billiards Association
in-Australia and New Zealand—as well as in South America.
Europe will have the most number
of slots with 40 followed by Asia with 30. North America has 14
slots while Oceania and South America has four each. Africa will
have two slots.
