Up close and personal with
a true to life manghihilot

By Joy Festin, Special to The Manila Times

The Manila Times: How old are you and when did you begin healing people?
Eustaquio Agbay: I am currently 80-year-old. I began as a healer 40 years ago.

TMT: How did you acquire your healing abilities?
EA: When I was a young man, I met a Mangyan in Mindoro who passed on to me secret words that supposedly have healing powers. Then, a good friend of mine in Mabini, Batangas, gave me a booklet on healing written in Latin. I also came from a family of healers. I am a native Batangueño.

TMT: How do you heal sick people?
EA: I simply whisper Latin prayers on them.

TMT: Do you call on a particular deity during these healing sessions?
EA: No, I pray to the Almighty God alone. He’s the only one who can heal people of their diseases.

TMT: Let’s say I want to become a healer. How can I develop healing abilities?
EA: You should ask a practicing healer to give you healing ability on a Good Friday.

TMT: Why on a Good Friday?
EA: That’s the way it is among us healers.

TMT: Any special requirement for a person to become a healer?
EA: His desire to heal must be innate.

TMT: Do you accept payment from your patients?
EA: No. The only thing that matters to me is that the patient gets healed.
