I’ve avoided reading the reviews online—though I know the
usually critical Rotten Tomatoes gave it an 88 percent. The lucky
ones who have seen it last Monday were respectful enough not to give
away any spoilers. I know there are people who are counting down to
today. Today, Batman: The Dark Knight opens in theaters across Metro
Manila.
Despite my trying to stay clear of the story and
the surprises, it is hard to avoid the buzz surrounding the
film—Heath Ledger’s apparently brilliant swan song, Chris
Nolan’s fantastic screenplay and moments that actually made some
people just tear up.
So while I can’t bring you the dish on Batman
today, I’m sure to find myself in a cinema with fellow fangirls
and fanboys relishing what appears to be a masterpiece.
And while the buzz is mainly on Ledger and
Nolan, I am almost certain to enjoy Christian Bale’s moments on
screen. No one does dark, disturbed, brooding and sexy in the same
breath quite like Bale (3:10 to Yuma, Equilibrium, the Machinist,
American Psycho, The Prestige to name a few of his past
efforts—not exactly films where you’d see him wear an eternally
sunshiny smile).
Next up for Mr. Bale is a film called “Public
Enemies” set in the 1930’s where he plays an agent of the law
out to put the shackles on notorious criminal John Dillinger and his
posse. Dillinger is of course played by Johnny Depp. Batman hunts
down Jack Sparrow. Should be quite a ride. Release is set for early
2009. I personally think it’s too much torture to have to wait
over a year for another Johnny Depp movie.
However, 2009 should also see the release of
Terry Gilliam’s The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus, where Depp
(along with Jude Law and Colin Farrell) steps in to play an
incarnation of the late Heath Ledger’s character in the film.
And to continue ticking off my list of recent
comic book adaptations (Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Wanted) being
dished out one after the other by a currently very geek-friendly
Hollywood, I am really excited about Hellboy 2: The Golden Army. I
do have a penchant for the darker stuff. I’ve seen various
versions of the trailers and am really curious about the film’s
villain, Prince Nuada—looks to me like Legolas gone baaaaad!
(Maybe he just forgot to use Uno Fiber Neo—Bloom fans might want
to check the ads out on YouTube).
It’s been a fun year so far at the
movies—and there’s still a lot to look forward to in the months
ahead and in 2009! And here’s to those of us swooping into the
cinemas later on to get our fix.
