WHILE helmets made from new-generation materials like carbon fiber
and kevlar are stronger and only weigh half as much as helmets made
from more conventional materials do, the downside is that these
premium helmets are heavier on the pocket, too, according to Spyder.
Spyder, which sells sports eyewear and safety
helmets, said its Cranium and Panther models (which are made from a
resin/fiber composite) and Sphinx, Sabre and Enduro models (molded
thermoplastic ABS) are good-quality choices also, their outer shells
are able to protect against penetration or abrasion, and absorb
energy by flexing upon impact.
Cheap helmets, Spyder said, often use recycled
plastic resins that bring down the cost of the helmet but does not
compare with the safety standards an ABS or fiberglass helmet
provides the user.
According to Spyder, it also uses its extensive
experience in optics to provide a distortion-free, high-impact
polycarbonate shield for its helmet visors—another important
component of a helmet. Polycarbonate is the same lens material
Spyder uses in its popular sports eyewear line.
Spyder said its helmets give consumers value for
money by offering quality at reasonable prices.
