Tamaraws demolish Maroons

FAR EASTERN UNIVERSITY (FEU) drubbed University of the Philippines (UP), 88-66, to gain a share of the second spot in the 71st University Athletic Association of the Philippines men’s basketball tournament Thursday at the Philsports Arena.

Skipper Benedict Fernandez sizzled with 16 points as FEU tied idle University of the East for second with two wins and one loss behind league-leader Ateneo de Manila University, which is unbeaten after three outings.

“We concentrated on our defense dahil nawala ang depensa namin sa last game namin [against La Salle]. Maganda ang galaw ng mga bata ngayon pero kailangan pa namin ng mas mag-improve para sa mga susunod pa naming laban,” said FEU coach Glenn Capacio.

Sophomore Aldrech Ramos contributed 14 markers, 8 rebounds and 4 blocks while Marlon Adolfo added 12 points for the Tamaraws.

The Fighting Maroons absorbed their second straight setback after beating the National University Bulldogs on July 5.

Jay Agbayani topscored for UP with 12 points and 5 rebounds while Martin Reyes added 11 points and 3 assists.

The Tamaraws unleashed a blistering 17-4 run behind Ramos and Jens Knuttel to post their biggest 86-62, going into the final minute.
