Summer has come and gone, and with the cool crispness of the rainy season setting in, we welcome a pleasant fashion opportunity to wear ensembles otherwise deemed unthinkable during the scorch of previous months.

To shield ourselves from the drizzle and bundle us up against the sometimes chilly winds, take a style adventure with fashion forward options that celebrate eclectic range and glam comfort, inspired by NYC.

Big Apple Inspirations

Celebrating the Cinematic Drama of New York, fall 2008 takes its style and cultural inspiration from three iconic films that capture the energy, edginess and free spirit of the city. Elements from The Basketball Diaries school uniform are reinterpreted through a modern urban lens.

Time for spirited pieces that make you feel good. Everything has a luxe spin, a textured hand jewel colors, opulent weaves, vintage–inspired blocked patterns, made modern with a pared–down polish and ease. The silhouette is super short and super voluminous.

Layering is key: Imagine oversized cardigans belted atop chambray shirt-dresses. Suit vests with striped cowlnecks and ruffled shirts. An emerald silk tunic cascades over wide-legged trousers, while menswear short and tights pair with a sleek trench and skinny scarf.

“Patch” it up

Next, A scene from Taxi Driver, where details from Niro’s Flight Jacket are viewed in a fresh new light. Patched, snaps, zippers and elastic trim play on denim, canvas and nylon.

Opulent shades of plum, orchid and crimson enrich a subdued palette of Lichen, Chocolate and surplus green. Faux fur feminizes an oversized parka. Buttoned patch pockets bring military aesthetic to the belted shirt dress. A shiny mechanics suit fuses workwear with ergonomic sleekness, blending toughness with femininity.

Dressed to the nines

The dress still reigns, sculpted and puffed, in Jacquard, Brocade or a Charming print. Top it with a long–haired shearling vest, a feminized camel coat, a lacquer red corduroy trench, a trimmed velvet mini parka, or ground it with an oversized sweater or sporty blouson cardigan.

Other options include the easy knit dress, the sweet puffed skirt or slouchy men’s pleat trousers. The look is as simple as it is embellished, finished with a silk cord belt, dark woolen tights, colored croc lace–up high platforms, a great shearling bag and a hat that adds a personal touch.

As the temperature drops as the rainy season sets in, walk through the late-night streets of Edie Sedgwick’s “Ciao! Manhattan.” Details emphasize a gritty-yet-glamoros downtown edge: Hemlines are raw, draped and asymmetric, hanging off shoulders.

Zippers, rounded pockets and lots of seaming lend iconic biker jacket styling. To trench coats, denim skirts and skinny black jeans. Metallic denim and silver-splattered tops light up the stark black-and-white palette. All these combine for an eclectic look that is dressier yet subdued.

Mix and match menswear

Menswear also tells a richly textured story, one that is cut narrow on top with ease on the bottom, traditional tweeds, glenplaids, camels and essential black are shot with flashes of high octane color. These are young, spirited clothes that travel your life, with refreshing optimism and authentic New York style.

In true DKNY Jeans tradition, creativity is in the Mix—where every detail, every layer reveals its own unique story.
