Vice President Noli “Kabayan” de Castro expressed
elation over the report that May Vecina, an overseas Filipino worker
in Kuwait sentenced to death for killing her seven-year-old ward, is
getting a commutation to life.
“We are first and foremost
happy for May, her family and friends. God intervened and answered
our prayers,” de Castro said.
Earlier, another Filipino
domestic helper, Marilou Ranario, who was convicted of murder in
Kuwait has been spared from death row. Philippine Ambassador Ricardo
Endaya confirmed to de Castro that Kuwaiti Emir Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber
Al-Sabah signed a decree on July 8, commuting Vecina’s death
sentence to life imprisonment.
De Castro said that overseas
Filipinos, especially domestic helpers in Middle East, should learn
from the experiences of Ranario and Vecina, as they should
understand that employment abroad is very difficult.
De Castro on May 16 appealed
Vecina’s case to the Kuwaiti Emir, who told the vice president
that he will see what he can do.
