Zeny Ducut appointment
defended by lawmakers

VETERAN lawmakers on Friday urged critics of Zenaida Ducut, the newly appointed chairman of the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC), to go to the proper forum in questioning her credentials.

Representatives Joel Villanueva of Citizens’ Battle Againts Corruption party-list and Benny Abante of Manila said that the proper forum to question Ducut’s credentials is the powerful Commission on Appointments.

“If Ducut does well it will be to the President’s [Gloria Arroyo] advantage. If not, then the President will be blamed. [Let’s] hope President Arroyo made a good choice for the good of her administration,” Abante said.

No less than the president’s son, Rep. Mikey Arroyo of Pampanga, endorsed Ducut to head the ERC, and that he can attest that her heart is for the poor.

“She has been instrumental in implementing countless pro-poor projects. As chairman of the Committee on Energy, I am confident that she will always prioritize the plight of the end users and protect them from possible management abuses by the industry players,” the younger Arroyo pointed out.

Ducut had been a member of the House of Representatives in three consecutive Congress from 1995 to 2004.

House Speaker Prospero Nograles said trust and confidence are very important factors in making appointments and that Ducut, a lawyer by profession, is competent and fully qualified to her new post.
