LETTER

Fernando should read Ronquillo

About “The Catholic Church and specific issues: Gambling” (Law and Philosophy Matter(s) column by Atty. Emmanuel Q. Fernando on July 12, 2008):

I hope your columnist has read your paper’s Special Report of Sunday July 13. It clearly spells out the position of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines on gambling and gives the reason for the CBCP’s opposition to both legal and illegal gambling in the Philippines.

Atty. Fernando should also read your columnist Marlen Ronquillo and learn about the true situation in Pampanga.

Gov. Ed Panlilio was elected not only because he is against jueteng but because he was also fighting the oligarchs of Pampanga, including alleged jueteng lords, who are friends and allies of President Arroyo. If Atty. Fernando only read the columns of Mr. Marlen Ronquillo he would learn that the jueteng lords are against the legalization of jueteng. He would also learn that as if by miracle Gov. Panlilio immediately enriched the province and shared the riches with the local governments by simply collecting quarry fees and properly turning over the collections to the provincial treasury.

Unfortunately, Gov. Panlilio might be toppled by the oligarchs and their Malacañang cabalen and patron who will persuade the fickle and ungrateful people to return to the old ways.
