In search of her roots

Asia has long been a land shrouded with a sense of mystique and grandeur with its ancient temples and majestic landscapes. Yet it is also one of the fastest developing areas in the world with skyscrapers sprouting in the horizon like trees. It is this seeming contradiction between the past and the present that has drawn many a Western traveler to explore the region. Nowhere can this be more obvious than in Taiwan.

Taiwan has had a long and colorful history over the centuries it has been occupied by the Chinese, Dutch and Japanese each leaving their mark on the island. It is a place where the old and the new exist in harmony complementing each other. Today it is not unusual to see century-old temples standing beside towering skyscrapers. It is these seemingly contradicting facets of Taiwan that Janet Hsieh explores as she goes discovering her roots in her new show Fun Taiwan on the Discovery Channel.

Born and raised in the United States, Janet returns “home” to Taiwan to explore Taiwan and delve deeper than any tourist or foreigner ever would, with the help of her local friends. Janet goes in search of the secrets, amazing places and fascinating people in Taiwan—from the rustic and historic ancient town of Lukang, to the lively city of central Taipei. The Taiwanese locals teach Janet about the culture, history and background of each place she visits. And as she discovers how this country has changed over time, Janet also learns of the traditions that have been preserved and passed on from generation to generation.

Whether it’s soaking in the natural hot springs of Taiwan, indulging in delicious street snacks and splurging on the latest fashion trends in downtown Taipei, or simply enjoying the warmth and hospitality of the Taiwanese, Janet jumps into each experience and adventure with both feet and captivates locals and viewers alike with her infectious energy.

Along the way Janet gets to know and understand the diversity of Taiwan. From the tribal groups in rural Hualien to the pop culture capital of Ximending, she gets to see first hand the diversity of Taiwan. She also experiences the various activities in Taiwan. Watch her ride a skate board, ride a tank, play the violin and hike mountains all in the name of better understanding her home.

Follow Janet on her journey as she finds out what it means to be Taiwanese and uncover the real Taiwan which isn’t found in the usual guide books. Join her as she discovers the very best that Taiwan has to offer.

Fun Taiwan premieres tonight on the Discovery Travel & Living from 11p.m. to midnight with encore presentations every Sunday 3p.m
