ADAMSON standouts Angela Benting and Hannah Suarez banked on their
all-around game to pull off a 21-16 triumph over University of the
Philippines’ (UP) Mary Ann Panganiban and Clarizze Lucindo Friday
at the start of the third leg of the 2008 Petron Ladies’ Beach
Volleyball Tournament at the sand courts of the University of the
East (UE)-Caloocan campus.
The 19-year-old Benting accounted for four
attacks as Adamson raced to a 13-7 lead and coasted to victory.
“Mahirap mag-adjust sa hangin, kaya pinapasok
ko ang serve ko sa kaliwa,” said Benting, center/spiker for the
Lady Falcons’ indoor team.
Her efforts with Suarez allowed them to take the
early lead in Group B of this volleyball extravaganza, backed by
Speedo, Mikasa and the UE-Caloocan athletic department.
UP standouts Ivory Joy Rivera and Pauline Genido,
and UE bets Mary Ann Balmaceda and Czarina Mitra took charge in
Group A after crushing separate foes.
Rivera and the 5’9” Genido hardly minded the
wind as they prevailed over Ateneo’s Sharah So and Pepi Sison,
21-15, while Balmaceda and Mitra hacked out a 21-16 victory over
Ateneo’s Asia Urquico and Jessica Morado.
Veteran spiker Sheryl Laborte and new partner
Nerissa Bautista were scheduled to play late Friday. Laborte won
last year’s grand championship with Bacolod City standout Jenny
Torres.
The 10 teams are divided into two groups of five
squads each playing in a single round robin. The top two teams from
each group will advance to the semis.
