WASHINGTON: Three people were shot and wounded on Thursday when a
gunman opened fire in a community college in Phoenix, Arizona, the
school reported on its website.
“According to the Phoenix Police Department,
three people were injured in a shooting incident in one of the
college’s buildings,” South Mountain Community College said in
an online bulletin to students.
A 25-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman were
in critical condition, while a 17-year-old boy was declared in
stable condition, local television said, citing firefighters who
took the three to a nearby hospital.
A witness said the shooter had been fighting
with another man in the college’s computer building and the gunman
appeared to be directing his shots and not firing at random, local
media said.
The 8,000-student college said classes were
canceled due to the shooting. “Police and the college’s staff
have taken steps to ensure the safety of students and staff,” it
said.
Phoenix police were not immediately available
for comment.
