Left-wing rebels vowed to launch more attacks against government and
military targets in Mindanao as thousands of troops have recently
been sent to the strife-torn region to fight insurgency.
The New People’s Army (NPA), the armed wing of
the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP), said the deployment of
military forces in southern Philippines will give the rebels
opportunities to carry out more “tactical offensives,” the
television network GMA News reported late Friday.
Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corp. and Total
(Philippines) Corp. opted not to follow other oil companies that are
holding off on price increases. The two firms increased diesel and
kerosene prices early Saturday.
The incoming National Economic Development
Authority Director-General, Ralph Recto, said Saturday he would
propose changes to the expanded value-added tax (E-VAT) that will
help ease the burden of surging prices on the masses.
Air safety investigators were searching for clues Saturday as to
what caused a dramatic mid-air rupture that left a gaping hole in
the fuselage of a Qantas plane carrying more than 300 passengers.
