Great ideas for small spaces

Not all of us have the luxury of living in a spacious house with spacious rooms and lots of roaming, playing, put-your-feet-up places.

Most of us have to eat, sleep, work, relax and dream in relatively small areas: a dorm room, a studio apartment, a tiny bungalow, a vertical townhouse, a rented room. But just because we lack space doesn’t mean we have to scrimp on style—or convenience.

Command Mounting products, which provide the complete solution to all decorating and organizing needs, shares these nifty tips for turning your small space into a pleasurable place that is both good to look at and highly efficient as well. You’ll find some great ways to increase your living and storage space, and get stylish on a small and simple budget as well!

1. First, focus on storage. Think of ways you can store things without needing extra space. Will knick knacks and magazines fit into a decorative vase or basket? Would gaily colored boxes or bauls be perfect for those extra clothes, shoes, CDs and pocket books? You can even use the baul as a coffee table or a side table to park your mood lamp on. Just concentrate on making more space and the creative ideas are sure to come.

2. Think vertical. Don’t gripe about the floor space. Make use of the walls! Create the illusion of height or width with horizontal or vertical lines that you can paint on. Install a bookshelf. Hang hooks that can hold pretty scarves or baskets that hold mail and receipts, change, or paper clips. Add decorative pictures, vases, or flowers in blank spaces.

3. Let the sunshine in. Don’t paint your space a dark color. Use sheer curtains to let the light in. Hang mirrors in various walls. Invest in floor lamps, table lamps, reading lamps and pin lights and give your space a nice, inviting glow. Draw the eye to an accent piece like a colorful painting, poster or special memento. Turn on the charm!

4. If you’re living in a dorm, make sure you can maximize both study time and chill time. Express your personality with a blanket or comforter that can be a decorative piece too. Get crates and fill them with CDs, books, notes and memorabilia. Personalize your space with posters, pictures, concert tickets or varsity pennants. Add cheer to your college years!

5. If you’re living in a loft or studio, think chic. Define spaces by using rugs and arrange furniture around those rugs. Use moveable partitions, movable bookshelves and versatile furniture. Maybe use a futon instead of a bed, and roll it out of sight in the daytime. Love your constantly evolving space.

6. With 3M Command’s array of hooks, clips, cords, picture hangers and spring clips, create “special effects” on your space. Command hooks and tapes are strong enough to hold as much as five pounds of weight and will leave no scratch, tear or stain on walls or any surface you use. You can change your décor and stuff around any time you wish and make everything new when you like it.
