Ateneo advances

ATENEO rallied from 5 points down to beat University of the Philippines (UP), 22-20, and enter the semifinals of the 2008 Petron Ladies’ Beach Volleyball Tournament third leg at the University of the East (UE)-Caloocan campus.

Asia Urquico scattered service winners while Jessica Morado took care of the net during the rally.

A reception error by Ivory Joy Rivera sealed UP’s doom and gave Ateneo its third win in four games.

Meanwhile, power-serving Hannah Suarez and Angela Benting of Adamson University thrashed National University’s Bernadette Victoria and Mervic Mangui, 21-3, to likewise finish with a 3-1 record.

Suarez and Benting first pulled off a 21-16 stopping of Mary Ann Panganiban and Clarize Lucindo of the UP, then went on to outplay UE campaigners Aimee de la Pena and Megami Bendijo, 21-12.

The Lady Falcons’ only loss (12-21) came at the hands of veteran Sheryl Laborte and her new partner Nerissa Bautista, who swept Group B.

The Lady Falcons clash in the crossover semifinals with UE’s Mary Ann Balmaceda and Czarina Mitra, who claimed a 4-0 sweep of Group A, while Laborte and Bautista meet Lady Eagles Urquico and Morado in the other semis pairing.
