3 missing, thousands displaced after ‘Igme’

THREE persons were reported missing and feared dead while a total of 1,223 families were affected by Typhoon Igme in widespread floods, landslides and power outages according to the latest report of the National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC).

Missing persons were identified as Jimmy Bala, 26, and a certain Loreto, 50, of Ilocos Norte and Edwin Montemayor, 27, of East Tubao in La Union.

The towns of Piddig, Pasuquin and Solsona in Ilocos Norte and Laoag City are the areas mostly hit by the typhoon with a total of 1,223 families or 6,014 individuals affected.

Several towns in Laoag and Ilocos Norte also experienced three- to four-feet deep floods as heavy rains spawned by Igme battered the region.

Around 94 families or 470 people from the towns of Lagangilang and Licuan Abra were also affected.

Classes in the elementary and secondary levels were suspended in Ilocos, Abra, La Union, Benguet, Mountain Province, Pangasinan, Zambales, Bataan, Bulacan, Rizal, Cavite and Metro Manila on Monday, while remaining shut across the northern regions as authorities assessed the damage to communities in the area, said NDCC.

Igme has left the Philippine Area of responsibility Monday afternoon, and on its way to Taiwan. The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said it doesn’t expect another typhoon within this week.
