With just over a week to go, the elections in an autonomous region
in southern Mindanao are poised to go on as scheduled despite calls
for a postponement because of a government peace pact with Muslim
rebels.
On Tuesday, a Congress divided
was the outcome of an impasse between lawmakers and proponents of a
move to postpone scheduled elections in the Autonomous Region in
Muslim Mindanao (ARMM).
Officials from North Cotabato
province went to the Supreme Court on Tuesday to block an agreement
between the government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF)
on the contentious issue of ancestral domain.

starting that day.
A leading critic of the
government asked President Gloria Arroyo to think local in tackling
the social and political crisis that the country is supposedly
facing.
