The Philippine Consulate General in Jeddah has
started receiving applications for the issuance of machine readable
passports (MRPs) on May 24.
On the first day of the
implementation of the MRP project, 29 applied, mostly Filipino
workers.
The first successful applicant
who has complied with the MRP requirements was Camama “Jun”
Mandangan, one of the consulate’s locally hired employees.
In spite of the 30-day waiting
period for the new MRPs, applicants were enthusiastic and excited
about the new passport. They were pleased that they will be issued a
safer and more secure travel document comparable to passports of
other countries and also one that complies with international
standards.
The consulate has informed the
local authorities of the start of the issuance of the MRPs, and the
procedures and length of time required so they could inform
employers accordingly.
