PARIS: Andy Murray’s third-round loss at the French
Open on Thursday will see him head straightaway for the grasscourts
of southern England where he hopes to lift the Wimbledon title in
early July.
The 21-year-old Scot went down
6-3, 6-7 (3-7), 6-3, 7-5 to Spanish 19th seed Nicolas Amalgro but he
said he had been delighted with his claycourt season.
“I think I proved I’m a good
clay court player,” he said.
“You saw by the way that he
reacted at the end of the match that it was a tough match. To win
against me on clay, it is a very good result. I’m not someone
that’s going to be taken lightly on this surface in the future, I
don’t think.”
Murray missed Wimbledon last year
as he continued his recovery from a bad wrist tendon injury
sustained on clay in Hamburg and his last campaign there remains in
2006 when as a 19-year-old he made the fourth round after defeating
former finalist Andy Roddick.
He will play at Queens, which he
regards as one of his favorite tournaments, then take a week off
before he plays Wimbledon at senior level for just the third time.
