LIPA CITY: Zamboanga City upset
defending men’s champion Cebu City with an emphatic regulation
five-inning, 17-1, victory that sent shock waves in the second day
of action of the National Open Softball Championships Saturday at
the Banay-Banay grounds in Barangay Banay-Banay.
With national team mainstay
Rogelio Rojas holding off the once dreaded Cebu offensive rotation
for only four hits, his teammates feasted on three Cebuano hurlers
with 22 connections, three in the second inning where the
Zamboanguenos put the outcome beyond doubt.
In the women’s division,
Adamson University pulled off a 4-1 reversal over defending champion
University of the Philippines.
Philippine Blu Girls ace pitcher
Syrel Ramos had the Lady Maroons hitters under the palm of her hands
in a two-hit no-relief job on the mound even as the rest of the Lady
Falcons bombarded lefty Dione Macasu with eight.
The victory came sweeter for
coach Ana Santiago’s girls as it more than made up for their loss
to Macasu, not only in the UAAP softball war but also last year in
this same tournament.
In other results, Rizal Province
defeated Air Force 6-1 while Rizal Technical University beat Laguna,
6-5.
