CHRISTOPHER ULBOC captured his
third gold while reigning SEA Games champion Julius Nierras
collected two golds at the close of the 2008 Milo National Open
Track and Field Championships at the Rizal Memorial oval Saturday.
Ulboc, representing Far Eastern
University, displayed his brilliant form to win the boys’
10,000-meter run. He clocked 33:29.6 minutes to beat Art Fronda of
UP Integrated School (36:15.8) and Berny Corpuz of Centrex Team
(36:50.9).
Ulboc, one of the most promising
middle-distance runners in the country, also won the 3,000-meter
steeplechase and 5,000-meter run in the three-day tournament
supported by Bistro Group Concepts Restaurant, TMS Shipping
president Terry Capistrano, Mayor Arturo Orosco of Roxas City and
Islander footwear.
Nierras, a member of the
Philippine Air Force, displayed his brilliant form to win the
men’s 400-meter run in 48.24 seconds. TMS Shipping bets Junrey
Bano (48.53) and Jimar Aing (50.01) finished second and third,
respectively.
The 28-year-old Nierras later
collected his second gold after topping the men’s 200-meter run in
21.86 seconds.
Romnick Herida of Far Eastern
University clocked 22.71 seconds for second place while Anthony
Santillan of Cebu settled for the bronze when he crossed the finish
line in 22.81 seconds.
“Medyo hindi maganda ang takbo
ko ngayon dahil marami akong events na sinalihan. Malayo sa personal
best ko. Target kong malampasan yung 45.95 seconds na kailangan para
makapasok sa Olympics,” said Nierras, who will try to qualify in
the Asian Grand Prix this month.
Thailand will host the first two
legs of the Asian Grand Prix on June 23 (Bangkok) and June 26 (Nakhon
Ratchasima) while the third and final leg will be held on June 30 in
Hanoi, Vietnam.
Other local bets who dominated
their respective events were Julius Sermona and Arniel Ferrera.
Sermona submitted the fastest
time of 31:39.00 to rule the men’s 10,000-meter run over Juniel
Languido (32:28.60) and Gerald Sabal (32:52.8) of the Nike Team.
Ferrera, on the other hand,
measured 44.47 meters to win the men’s discus throw. Nixon Mas,
also of PAF, won the silver in 43.59 meters while Romeo Jonald of
Health Team submitted 37.46 meters to take the bronze.
