PEOPLE
By Bob Garon
Angels of God

Sometimes our pain is very deep and real, and we stand before her very silent, because there is no language for our pain, only a moan. Night’s heart is full of pity for us: she cannot see our aching; she takes our hand in hers, and the little world grows very small and very far beneath us. Borne on her dark wings, we pass for a moment into a mightier Presence than her own, and in the wondrous light of that great Presence, all human life lies like a book before us and we know that Pain and Sorrow are but the angels of God.” (Jerome K. Jerome)

What? Angels of God called Pain and Sorrow? Angels are supposed to be guardians and bearers of good news, not messengers called Pain and Sorrow.

We have a distorted concept of God loving us. We think that, if He loves us, He will keep us from pain and sorrow. He will protect and guard us we belive, from that which works against our well being.

The truth is that most of our most significant blessings usually come wrapped in pain. There is very little in life that is meaningful and that can be had without pain. And often , the greatest blessings come in the midst of the most intense pain. There could not have been a glorious Easter Sunday without the horrors of Good Friday.

Most blessings, require as prerequisites hard work, sacrifice and a good deal of determination. And these qualities always call for a measure of pain. Perhaps it is because God isn’t a Santa Claus who dishes out blessings indiscriminately. There is method and purpose to what He does. He isn’t an enabler who gives us everything we want. Instead, He gives us everything we need. Assuming we are willing to receive and accept His gifts with a grateful and accepting heart, we soon discover that His blessings are a mixture of sugar and spice, pleasure and pain, joy and sorrow. He will work to equip us to succeed and find our way in this world of ours.

Look back on your life and you will undoubtedly find that so many blessings were preceeded by, yes, pain and sorrow. And when you say thank you to God, as you must, be sure to assure Him that you willingly accept any blessing sent your way, even if it is delivered by the angles called Pain and Sorrow.
