TOKYO: Asian men’s volleyball champion Australia whipped Argentina
on Sunday for its second straight win in the final qualifying round
for the Beijing Olympics.
Australia, the Athens Olympics silver medallist
which defeated Asian rival Thailand on Saturday, cruised to a 25-16,
25-20, 25-18 victory in the eight-team round robin competition.
Paul Carroll was the team’s best scorer for
the second match in a row, securing 22 points for Australia.
“Obviously, I’m very pleased,” said
Australian captain Benjamin Hardy.
The loss was Argentina’s first in two outings.
Earlier in the day, Algeria cruised to its
second straight win with a 25-23, 25-21, 25-15 victory over winless
Thailand, but Thai coach Supajirakul Monchai said he was nonetheless
pleased with his team’s effort.
The winners of the tournament and the
