CAB grants local airlines’
fare, cargo rates hike

By Darwin G. Amojelar, Reporter

DOMESTIC and international air tickets have risen anew after the Civil Aeronautics Board granted the request of local and international airlines that operate in the Philippines for an additional fuel surcharge in light of skyrocketing jet fuel prices.

A fuel surcharge is a temporary relief granted to airlines to help them recover losses they incur from higher jet fuel prices.

The airlines given the provisional authority to impose higher fuel surcharges are the Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, Air Philippines, Asian Spirit, Southeast Asian Airlines (SEAIR), Gulf Air, Singapore Airlines, Northwest Airlines and Silk Air.

Lucio-Tan owned PAL have started implementing higher fuel surcharge for its domestic flights since May 27, effective for three months. For Luzon-Visayas, PAL will charge P1,330 to P1,480; Visayas-Mindanao, P1,310 to P1,430; within Luzon, P980 to P1,130; within Visayas, P850 to P970 and within Mindanao, P1,300 to P,1,400.

For cargo, PAL will impose P2 per kilogram for flights within Luzon; P3 for Visayas and P4 for Mindanao.

Air Philippines has also implemented higher fuel surcharge of P1,380 to P1,650 for its Luzon-Mindanao flights; for Luzon-Visayas, P1,130 to P1,330; within Luzon, P780 to P980; Visayas-Mindanao, P1,100 to P1,310; within Visayas, P750 to P850 and within Mindanao, P1,100 to P1,300.

Asian Spirit will charge P1,250 to P1,600 for Luzon-Mindanao flights; P1,020 to P1,320, Luzon-Visayas; P850 to P980 within Luzon; P800 to P900 within Mindanao and Visayas-Mindanao, P950 to P1,250.

For cargo, Asian Spirit will impose P4 to P9 for Luzon-Mindanao; P3 to P8 for Luzon-Viasayas; within Luzon, within Visayas and within Mindanao, P3 to P7.

SEAIR also implemented higher fuel surcharge for flights within Luzon, P775 to P975; Luzon-Visayas, P825 to P1,025; within Visayas, P595 to P795; Visayas-Mindanao, P775 to P925 and within Mindanao, P550 to P750.

Cebu Pacific will charge P1,100 for Manila-Laog-Manila; P1,05o for Manila-Tugegarao-Manila; P930 for Cebu-Iloilo-Cebu; P1,420, Manila-Bacolod-Manila; P1,800, Manila-Cagayan-Manila; P1,900, Manila-Davao, Manila, among others.

For international flights, PAL has implemented higher surcharge for China flights, $54 to $58; Korea, $34 to $54; Singapore, $29 to $34; Indonesia, $50 to $74; Hong Kong, $35 to $40; Macau, $35 to $40; US/Canada, $119 to $129.

The CAB also approved the application for higher fuel surcharge of Northwest Airlines to $70 from $40; Gulf Air, to $80 from $55; Silk Air, to $95 from $80 and Singapore Airlines, to $35 from $30.

Fuel accounts for a third of an airline’s operating cost per passenger, and is the second-highest expense next to labor.

The price of jet fuel started going up in 2002, but local and foreign airlines began asking for an adjustment in their fuel surcharges only in 2004.
