in national open softball tilt

LIPA CITY: A three-way battle for the men’s division supremacy loomed in the National Open Softball Championships as host Lipa City, Air Force and Zamboanga City preserved their unbeaten records Monday in the elimination round played in three different venues.

The hosts, enjoying their best year in this annual tournament, thanks to a combined rebuilding efforts conducted by the city government and the Lipa City Ambassadors of Softball, swept their doubleheader for a fifth straight victory that catapulted them to the undisputed leadership in Group A and the two-group men’s play.

The boys of Mayor Oscar Gozos demolished Marikina City, 7-4, at the Barangay Banay-Banay and scored a 4-1 win over Bulacan State Univesity at the Barangay Marauoy.

The twin victories gave Lipa City a 5-0 win-loss slate and assured the Lipenos of a spot in the four-team page system semifinal round in their Group.

In Group B, the Airmen and the Zamboanguenos downed separate rivals to post their third triumph in as many outings.

Air Force massacred Laguna-Paciano in an 8-l regulation five-inning contest while Zamboanga cut short Lipa-TCIG’s giant-killing spree with a 7-1 decision

In the women’s division, Rizal Province blasted Prime Peak of Baguio City 19-0 to join Adamson-Lipa City on top of Group B at 3-0.

Adamson-Manila, meanwhile, scored a 9-0 victory over Polytechnic University of the Philippines to earn a share of Group A lead with Rizal Techno-logical University at 2-0.

In other results, Indonesia’s West Papua finally barged into the win column after beating BSU, 10-3, while defending men’s titlist Cebu took its second win in four starts with a 10-3 decision over Cavite City.
