My friend Dizzy rounded up seven girls including myself last
Saturday night, uniting us with that community of women all over the
world, to watch the Sex and the City movie. This was appropriately
followed by an after-hours session which included take out Chinese
food, ice cream and butterscotch vodkas with wafer chocolate.
Overall, the movie was sweet and enjoyable
especially for fans of the HBO TV series. However, I found the cuts
absolutely irritating and pointless. Basically the sex—which I
imagine wasn’t particularly lewd, lascivious or in any way
pornographic, these were ladies with their husbands or
partners—was cut out of this R-18 movie. Meaning no minors were
allowed anyway, not that they’d be interested as they have Indiana
Jones and Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, The Chronicles Of Narnia:
Prince Caspian and Kung Fu Panda all vying for their attention.
I felt like I was an 8-year- old with my
religious aunt covering my eyes with her hands every time something
objectionable appeared while we were watching something on the
Betamax. (My, my, Karen, we are showing our age—which no one can
tell judging by your youthful looks alone-Ed.) I thought this made
absolutely no sense, and my sensibilities were insulted.
This makes one ponder again how a film like
Rambo IV with bloody bodies bearing severed limbs, bleeding holes in
the head and other such graphic visions of what happens as a result
of explosions and gunfire gets away without the cuts.
A good part of Sex and the City is fantasy.
First, I don’t have a single pair of high-heeled pumps or sandals
in my shoe rack, I don’t know how to walk in them. I’m of the
mind it takes a superhuman ability to pound the streets of New York
in those shoes all day and not have blisters or back problems. Not
to mention, these shoes come with fabulous put-together outfits. The
shoes and fashion though are for some, a much-anticipated part of
the film.
Second, despite the bittersweet tones, I think
it’s also a fantasy how everything sort of falls into place just
the same for all the characters at the end. I’ll leave it at that
so there are no spoilers.
The reality part for me was nothing compares to
having an incredible bunch of friends and “sisters” who are by
your side: through your milestones, through the times you’re
riding high and feeling strong and through the times you get your
heart broken or feel utterly lost. As an ode to friendship, Sex and
the City totally scores.
P.S. Locally made Sebastian’s Ice Cream has
four limited edition flavors inspired by ladies of Sex and the City
: Carrie—coconut ice cream with white rum, raspberry swirl and
white chocolate shavings, Miranda— coffee ice cream with Kahlua
and bitter—sweet chocolate shavings, Charlotte—milk chocolate
Amaretto ice cream swirled with whipped cream ice cream,
Samantha—dark chocolate ice cream with dark rum and mixed berry
swirl.
