Writing for the children of the world

The 1st Canvas Story Writing For Young Children Competition

For years, they have successfully brought together the finest painters with most inspiring writers to collaborate on creating the finest children’s books in the Philippines, now the Center for Art, New Ventures & Sustainable Development (Canvas.ph) introduces the country’s most promising fabulists to the world.

Canvas announces the launch of the first Canvas Story Writing for Young Children Competition. The winner of the competition receives of P25,000. The top five entries selected by Canvas will be reviewed by Kelly Sonnack, Literary Agent at the Sandra Dijkstra Literary Agency, “Regarded by many as the most powerful literary agent on the West Coast,” according to a recent Los Angeles Times and considered by Esquire, Publishers Weekly and the New York Observer as one of the United States’ top five literary agents.

The contest is part of Canvas’ advocacy to open new opportunities for Filipino writers and visual artists in the global market.

Canvas is best known for its annual Romeo Forbes Children’s Story Writing Competition, which challenges writers to create a tale inspired by a painting done especially for the competition. The writer with winning entry gets to have his story illustrated by the same artist who created the seminal painting and have their collaboration published. Last year, winning entry produced The Rocking Horse, the highly acclaimed collaboration between renowned painter Elmer Borlongan and winning writer Becky Bravo.

With the Canvas Story Writing for Young Children Competition, authors for young audiences take center stage. The contest is open to all Filipinos. Entries must be in English. The target readership are children 4 to 6 years old. The maximum length is 1,200 words. Stories may reflect Philippine culture but should have a global resonance.
