For years, they have successfully brought together the finest
painters with most inspiring writers to collaborate on creating the
finest children’s books in the Philippines, now the Center for
Art, New Ventures & Sustainable Development (Canvas.ph)
introduces the country’s most promising fabulists to the world.
Canvas announces the launch of the first Canvas
Story Writing for Young Children Competition. The winner of the
competition receives of P25,000. The top five entries selected by
Canvas will be reviewed by Kelly Sonnack, Literary Agent at the
Sandra Dijkstra Literary Agency, “Regarded by many as the most
powerful literary agent on the West Coast,” according to a recent
Los Angeles Times and considered by Esquire, Publishers Weekly and
the New York Observer as one of the United States’ top five
literary agents.
The contest is part of Canvas’ advocacy to
open new opportunities for Filipino writers and visual artists in
the global market.
Canvas is best known for its annual Romeo Forbes
Children’s Story Writing Competition, which challenges writers to
create a tale inspired by a painting done especially for the
competition. The writer with winning entry gets to have his story
illustrated by the same artist who created the seminal painting and
have their collaboration published. Last year, winning entry
produced The Rocking Horse, the highly acclaimed collaboration
between renowned painter Elmer Borlongan and winning writer Becky
Bravo.
With the Canvas Story Writing for Young Children
Competition, authors for young audiences take center stage. The
contest is open to all Filipinos. Entries must be in English. The
target readership are children 4 to 6 years old. The maximum length
is 1,200 words. Stories may reflect Philippine culture but should
have a global resonance.
