CALIFORNIA DREAMING
By Carmen C. Hernandez
Fil-Am democrats

San Francisco, CA—While interest remains focused on Senators Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama and John McCain, Filipino-Americans in the Bay Area are also vying for elective positions this November. On Friday, the Fil-Am Democratic Club will introduce their candidates at a dinner presentation to be held at the War Memorial Center.

Among the candidates running for local office are Mike Guingona, Ray Buenaventura, Buenaflor Nicolas, Robert Uy and Ora Seyler. So far, the only Republican who is keeping us informed of her candidacy is Chit Applegate who is aiming for an assembly seat in the Twelfth District. Ray, by the way, is now a super delegate for Clinton, but it may all be for naught, because Obama is expected to be the Democratic standard bearer.

Alice Bulos, the matriarch and inspiration of the Fil-Am community, celebrated her birthday recently. Friends literally packed her south San Francisco home to greet her. As usual, sister Ludy Reyes prepared a sumptuous buffet for the many visitors who flowed in and out of Alice’s dining room Among them were Commissioner Ray Satorre, fellow-Thomasian Mila Abuda, former Colma Mayor Larry Formalejo, Philippine Association of University Women President Linda Galeon, SF City Attorney Ernie Llorente and his wife Mila, retired Judge Ron Quidachay and his wife Kathy, Mona Pasquil, and Nene Pamatpat, a youthful 94 years old.

Speaking of Nene, she confided that she seldom becomes ill. Her secret? Vicks Vaporub, which she lavishly smooths over her body every night. The feisty lady said she drinks Sustagen for breakfast daily, without fail, even when she is traveling to Canada, Europe and elsewhere. Baby Orlina Howard was another birthday celebrant. Baby turned 70 and marked the evening with a Hawaiian Luau at the William Walker Recreation Center in Foster City.

Members of the Filipino Ministry at St. Bart’s Parish Church in Hillsborough/San Mateo are all excited about their Marian Festival honoring the Blessed Mother on May 31st at the church’s social hall. The event will feature a video presentation of the Life of Mary as depicted by an amazing collection of Marian pictures and statues gathered, researched and collected by Marilen Limcaoco de Guzman; a choir presentation, floral offerings by the parish children, and a Filipino buffet.

Organizers include Precy and Tito Yusi, Lucy Andal, Linda and Dave Byers, Romy and Genedine Floresca, Victoria Sousa, etc. Lily and Ed Mauricio can’t stop smiling over their court victory last week over Lino Magpantay and the latter’s young wife Vicky. Kudos to Rodel Rodis for his great legal prowess, and the great American judicial system that truly supports fair and right over wrong.
